RECORDS DUMPED AT LANDFILL LITTER NEIGHBORHOOD

As reported in the Upper Dauphin sentinel on April 23, 1996, Ben and Lori Brown found their yard littered with paper. The materials were evidently dropped there when a recent windstorm hit the local landfill.

To the surprise of the Browns, however, this litter turned out to be a little more than the usual trash. Among the papers found was a considerable amount of confidential information. Examples of the information include a prescription for a local citizen with his name and phone number, bank account information, cellular phone transaction bills with numbers and addresses, canceled checks, copies of IRS filings and student records.

While some of the parties to the incident blamed the landfill for mismanagement, those victimized persons that were contacted thought the information should have been destroyed in the first place.
